Common name: Flat-topped Aster

Scientific name: Aster umbellatus

Dimensions:
    Flower: 1/2-3/4" (1.5-2 cm) wide
    Plant height: 1-7' (30-210 cm)

Blooming period: August-September

Habitat: Moist thickets, swamp borders, woods

Description: Flattish clusters of flower heads with 7-15 white rays. Rays tend to curve downward or backward; yellowish central disk that turns purple with age. Leaves 2-6" (3-15 cm) long, toothless, stalk-less, tapering at the ends. One of the first asters to bloom. Aster family. (August 28)
