Scientific name: Sanguinaria canadensis

Dimensions:
  Flower: 1-2 (2.5-5 cm) wide   Plant height: 5-12" (12.5-30 cm)

Blooming period: March-May

Habitat: Moist or dry rich woods

Description: Showy 8 to 10-petaled white flowers solitary on stalks "embraced" by the wavy or coarsely toothed leaves. Four petals are usually longer than the others. Numerous stamens. The plants are usually to 6" (15 cm) when flowering, later to 12". Leaves are round, 3-9 lobed, 4-10" (10-25 cm) wide. The plant gets its name from the orange-red sap of the broken stem. Poppy family. (May 2)
