Common name: Kidneyleaf Buttercup (Small-flowered Buttercup)

Scientific name: Ranunculus abortivus

Dimensions:
  Flower: ¼" (6 mm) wide
  Plant height: 6-24" (15-60 cm)

Blooming period: May-August

Habitat: Moist or dry woods, damp thickets, fields

Description: Few to many small flowers with very small drooping yellow petal-like sepals surrounding petals that are shorter and narrower than the sepals; numerous stamens and pistils characteristic of the buttercup family although this example has little resemblance to other members of the genus. Basal leaves of this branched plant are ½ to 2" (1.5-5 cm) wide, kidney-shaped, round, or heart-shaped, stalked, with scalloped edges. Stem leaves are stalkless (sessile) deeply divided into 3-5 lobes. Buttercup family. (May 28)
