Common name: Little Floating Heart

Scientific name: Nymphoides cordata

Dimensions:
  Flower: ¼-½" (6-12 mm) wide
  Plant height: Aquatic; flowers just above the water

Blooming period: July-September

Habitat: Bogs, ponds, slow streams

Description: The small white flowers of this water lily-like plant are solitary on stalks ¼" to 2" (6 mm to 5 cm) above the water; 5 petals, mostly separate; 5 sepals; yellow at base. The floating leaves are heart-shaped, ½-2½" (1.5-6.5 cm) wide. Near the water's surface, below the leaf on the leaf stem is a small cluster of tubers from which the flowers grow. Buckbean family.
