Indian Cucumber Root

Common name: Indian Cucumber Root

Scientific name: Medeola virginiana

Dimensions:
    Flower: About 1/2" (1.5 cm) long
    Plant height: 1-3' (30-90 cm)

Blooming period: May-early July

Habitat: Rich and moist woodlands

Description: One or more small, nodding yellowish-green flowers hang beneath the upper whorl of leaves from which they emerge; 3 petals curved back and 3 petal-like sepals curved back; 6 reddish stamens; ovary with 3 long, curved-back reddish-brown stigmas. Leaves lanceolate, in 2 whorls; 5-9 leaves in whorl at middle of plant, 2½-5" (6.5-12.5 cm) long; 3-5 in whorl at top, 1-3" (2.5-7.5 cm) long. Lily family. (July 11)
