Common name: Indian Pipe

Scientific name: Monotropa uniflora

Dimensions:
    Flower: 1/2-1" (1.5-2.5 cm) long
    Plant height: 4-10" (10-25 cm)

Blooming period: June-September

Habitat: Woodland humus

Description: White, waxy woodland plant, sometimes pinkish, on a translucent stem; flower nodding at first, erect at maturity; 4-5 petals; 10-12 stamens; 1 pistil. Leaves scale-like, alternate. Plant lacks chlorophyll for photosynthesis, obtaining nourishment from the rich organic soil in which it grows; turns blackish later. Indian Pipe family. (July10)
