Blue False Indigo

Common name: Blue False Indigo

Scientific name: Baptisia australis

Dimensions:
  Flower: ¾-1" (18-25 mm) long
  Plant height: Up to 5' (15 dm)

Blooming period: May-June

Habitat: Moist, usually rocky or gravelly soil, woods

Description: Large dark blue or violet flowers in erect, elongated clusters (racemes). Clover-like leaves up to 3" (7.5 cm) long; leaflets wider toward tips, tapering toward the base (oblanceolate). Plant's sap turns purple when exposed to air. Escaped from cultivation. Pea family. (June 18)
