Habitat: Fields, cultivated areas

Description: A native of Europe and extensively cultivated in New Hampshire, this short-lived perennial is well-recognized for its variously colored petals, with the upper petals usually darker than the lower. Plant is sparsely hairy; flowers long-stalked. Basal leaves round or heart-shaped; upper leaves narrower, 1½-2" (4-5 cm) long. Middle lobe of stipules toothed. Escaped from cultivation. Violet family. (May 6)
