Bristly Locust

Common name: Bristly Locust (Rose Acacia)

Scientific name: Robinia hispida

Dimensions:
  Flower: 3/4 - 1" (2-2.5 cm) long
  Plant height: 2-9' (60-270 cm)

Blooming period: June-July

Habitat: Open woods and roadsides

Description: Rose-purple pea-shaped flowers in elongated clusters in which the flowers open in sequence from the stem end to the tip (raceme). Compound leaves divided into 7-13 oblong leaflets 1 1/4 - 2 1/4" (3-6 cm) long. The plant stems, flower stalks and calyx bearing dense to sparse coarse glandular hairs. Although common as wildflower in southern U.S., escaped from cultivation in New Hampshire. Pea family. (June 7)
