Field Mint

Common name: Field Mint (Wild Mint)

Scientific name: Mentha arvensis

Dimensions:
  Flower: About 1/4" (6 mm) long, 1/8" (3 mm) wide
  Plant height: 6-24" (15-60 cm)

Blooming period: July-September

Habitat: Moist places, shores

Description: Tiny pale-violet, lavender or white bell-shaped flowers clustered around plant stem in leaf axils; 4-lobed corolla, occasionally 5-lobed; 4 stamens. Leaves 1-3" (2.5-7.5 cm) long, smaller toward top of plant; short-stemmed with several pairs of lateral veins; egg-shaped (ovate) to lance-shaped (lanceolate); toothed; strong mint odor. Stem usually more or less hairy. The only native mint of 10 or so species found in the Northeast, the leaves are used for flavoring in foods. Mint family. (September 3)
