American Mountain Ash

Common name: American Mountain Ash

Scientific name: Sorbus americana

Dimensions:
  Flower: ¼" (6 mm) wide
  Plant height: 6-30' (2-9 meters)

Blooming period: May-June

Habitat: Moist soil in woods and on mountain tops.

Description: Numerous white flowers in broad, rounded or flat crowded 3-6" (7.5-15 cm) wide clusters; each flower with 5 rounded petals narrower at the base and equal to or longer than stamens. Leaves with 11-17 stalkless (sessile) lance-shaped leaflets 1½-4" (4-10 cm) long arranged in pairs along central midrib (pinnately compound); long-pointed; saw-toothed. This popular ornamental yields bright red berries that last into winter and provide food for grouse, gross-beaks, cedar waxwings and other birds. Rose family. (May 28)
