Black Nightshade

Common name: Black Nightshade

Scientific name: Solanum nigrum

Dimensions:
  Flower: 1/4-3/8" (6-10 mm) wide
  Plant height: 6-24" (15-60 cm)

Blooming period: July-September

Habitat: Woods, thickets, weedy places

Description: Small white drooping star- shaped flowers closely clustered with the terminal flowers blooming before lower flowers (umbelliform); petals often unequal, reflexed; stamens form a yellow cone ("beak"). Leaves 3/4-3 1/4" (2-8cm) long, oval or roughly triangular, with irregular blunt teeth, stalked. Plant hairless or minutely hairy. Fruit is black and poisonous when young. Native to North America. Nightshade family. (September 3)
