  Flower:1/2"-3/4" (1.5-2 cm) wide
  Plant height: 4-10" (10-25 cm)

Blooming period: July-August

Habitat: Shady, dry woods

Description: Nodding white or pink waxy, fragrant flowers in terminal clusters of 4-8, each flower with a ring of reddish anthers, 5-lobed calyx with rounded petals, and 10 stamens. The leaves of this erect, native evergreen are narrowly oval, broader toward the tip, 1¼-2½" (3-6 cm) long, shiny, broadly pointed, toothed, and radiate in whorls from the stem. Because the flower is nodding it is easy to miss its beautiful, intricate design. Wintergreen family. (July 6)
