Common name: Round-lobed Hepatica

Scientific name: Hepatica americana

Dimensions:
  Flower: ½-1" (1.5-2.5 cm) wide   Plant height: 4-6" (10-15 cm)

Blooming period: April-May

Habitat: Dry or moist upland leafy woods

Description: Pinkish, lavender blue or white solitary flowers on hairy stalks. The 6-10 "petals" are actually sepals. Petals are absent; numerous stamens, several pistils; 3 green sepal-like, oval to elliptical bracts below each flower. Leaves are basal, 2-2½" (5-6.5 cm) wide, with 3 rounded lobes. An early spring wildflower whose leaves are persistent and green until the following spring. Buttercup family. (April 30)
