Creeping Spearwort

Common name: Creeping Spearwort

Scientific name: Ranunculus flammula

Dimensions:
  Flower: 1/4-1/2" (6-12 mm) wide
  Plant height: Prostrate or creeping 6-18" (15-45 cm) long

Blooming period: July-September

Habitat: Sandy or muddy shores

Description: Solitary flowers on a low, creeping plant; 4-7 petals with sepals half as long as the petals. Leaves 1/2-2 1/2" (1-11 cm) long, usually thread-like or linear, sometimes lance-shaped, broader at either end; toothless or slightly toothed. Common in Canada's Maritime Provinces, not so much in New Hampshire. A mud-loving member of the Buttercup family. (July 30)
