Staghorn Sumac

Common name: Staghorn Sumac

Scientific name: Rhus typhina

Dimensions:
    Flower: 1/4-3/8" (.6-1 cm) wide in
    pyramidal clusters to 8" (20 cm) long
    Plant height: 3 - 20' (1-6.5 meters)

Blooming period: June - July

Habitat: Fields, clearings, dry soil

Description: Branches with soft velvety
hairs resembling that on deer's antlers when
in velvet, thus the plant's name; leaves are
compound, with 10-25 opposite, lanceolate,
toothed leaflets, each 2-5" (5-12.5 cm) long,
dark green above, paler below; fruit is berry-
like, reddish-brown, covered with bright red
hairs (see red-orange category).
