Tall Blue Lettuce

Common name: Tall Blue Lettuce

Scientific name: Lactuca biennis

Dimensions:
  Flower: 3/8-1/2" (10-14 mm) wide
  Plant height: 2-15' (30-225 cm)

Blooming period: July-September

Habitat: Moist thickets and clearings

Description: Numerous blue flower heads in large, elongate, rather narrow branched clusters. Leaves deeply lobed like those of dandelion, occasionally just toothed, 4-16" (10-40 cm) long, sometimes hairy on the main veins beneath, stalkless, growing from hairless (glabrous) stems. A milky, sticky sap emerges from crushed or broken leaves and branches. We found the blossoms to usually be open mid- morning to mid-afternoon. Aster family. (August 14)
