Northern Downy Violet

Common name: Northern Downy Violet (Ovate-leaved Violet)

Scientific name: Viola fimbriatula

Dimensions:
   Flower: ½" (1.5 cm) wide
   Plant height: 3-6" (7.5-15 cm)

Blooming period: April-May

Habitat: Dry woods, clearings, fields

Description: A common violet with light blue petals on stalk separate from leaf stalks; white in center; flower has "beards" on all three lower petals and likely a few fine hairs at base of upper petals. Entire plant downy, including fine hairs of leaves, stems and sepals. Leaves are egg-shaped or oblong, 1-2" (2.5-5 cm) long, with short leafstalks clumped at the plant's base. Violet family.
